ABOUT THE EVENT

Polymer micro/nanoparticles have  attracted  increasing  attention  from  chemists,  biologists,  engineers  and  pharmaceutical scientists because they provide the possibility of transporting bioactive compounds to specific tissues. When this particles are manufactured from natural and biodegradable synthetic polymers have advantageous of biocompatibility, biodegradability  and  low immunogenicity. However, preparation of polymeric micro/nanoparticles is the difficulty of scaling up, beside this particles have low drug-loading capacity and wide size distribution. The focus of this proposal is create a research network to develop reproducible manufacturing processes of biopolymer micro/nanoparticles, which will be potentially applicable for bioactive substance delivery.

Goals:

To exchange scientific and technological expertise in the field of biopolymer micro/nanoparticles for medical applications in agriculture.

To promote the long-term collaboration of research groups from the Advanced Polymers Research Center, CIPA, Chile; University of A Coruña, Spain; Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, Spain; Universidad de Salamanca, Spain, Technological Grenoble Institute, France;  National Research Council, Canada; Universidad de Concepción, Chile and Universidad de San Sebastián, Chile.

Alain Dufresne is currently Professor at The International School of Paper, Print Media and Biomaterials (Pagora) at Grenoble Institute of Technology, France. He obtained a PhD in Electronics from the National Institute of Applied Sciences at Toulouse. He is an expert on polysaccharide nanofibrils and nanocrystals (cellulose, chitin, starch), on processing and characterization of nanocomposites based on renewable resources and on valorization of the biomass. He received the 2016 International Nanotechnology Division Award and FiberLean® Technologies Prize awarded by TAPPI, and EPNOE Science Award 2019. He is in the 2016 top 300 most cited researchers in materials science and engineering/Elsevier Scopus Data, and 2018, 2019, 2020 & 2021 highly cited researchers/Clarivate Analytics. In the «polymers» subfield of Subject wise world ranking of top 2 percent scientists conducted in 2020 by Stanford University, he ranked 9th in the world and 1st in Europe among the 80,670 researchers worldwide in this field.

Dr. M. Isabel Fernández Bachiller is currently responsable of the Pilot Plant and Biotechnology Areas in Centro de Química Aplicada y Biotecnología (CQAB), Universidad de Alcalá (Madrid, Spain) and Associate Professor of the Deparment of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry in Universidad de Alcalá (Madrid, Spain). She carried out her Ph.D. in the Medicinal Chemistry Institut in Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) in Madrid and obtained her PhD from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She did postdoctoral work at the Medicinal Chemistry Institut of Leibniz Institüt für Molekulare Pharmacology (FMP) with a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship. She has specialized in the development and implementation of new methodologies for the identification, design and synthesis of peptides with therapeutic interest, risk analysis of N-Nitrosamines in active ingredients, and synthesis and characterization of biopolymers and copolymers based on PLA, PBS, PBA, PBIA, PEF applied in biomedicine and in the food sector through the use of both enzymatic and metallic catalysts.
